The Last Great Race.

This week we are featuring in our Gift Shop Friday Series the Book, “The Last Great Race” The S.S. United States and the Blue Riband by Lawrence M. Driscoll.

This book is written by local resident Lawrence M. Driscoll.

An insert from the book:
O June 23, 1952, the new superliner S.S. United States sailed into her home port of New York. As she passed the Statue of Liberty, harbor craft of all sizes converged on her. Aircraft circled an swooped overhead, occasionally diving for a closer photo. Helicopters whirled along at funnel level.

Launched in the early 1950’s the ship was at that time sleek, modern and fast. On her maiden voyage she outran the existing speed record for liners on the North Atlantic – the first American -flag ship to do so for nearly 100 years. And there is some satisfaction in knowing that the previous record holders were British.

Images of America.
SYRACUSE TELEVISION

This week in our Gift Shop we are selling for 20% off the Book. “Images of America Syracuse Television”. This book is written by Christie Casciano Burns, Tim Fox and Lou Gulino.

Most television viewers today take for granted the seemingly endless choices a click away from their fingertips. Who could have imagined, when the first television sets came on the market, that there would one day be whole networks devoted solely to food, fashion, music, news and sports. But with all those options, there is one constant from the earliest days of television transmission: we still have local television stations broadcasting from here at home.

When television came to the Syracuse area in the late 1940’s, the new medium was all about imagination and endless possibilities. Black and white images flickered on cathode-ray tubes, many of which were manufactured just north of Syracuse at the General Electric plant on Electronics Parkway in Liverpool.

Sisters of Cain

Miriam Grace Monfredo, author of Must the Maiden Die presents “Sisters of Cain”.

“Seneca Falls is our prefect mirror for viewing the American women and men of the 1860’s.” – Chicago Tribune

Miriam Grace Monfredo is ” at her best pulling plot twist out of actual events. Her research is evident on every page, ” raves Publishers Weekly abut the intriguing Seneca Falls Mystery series. Now, to capture the first tumultuous years of the Civil War, Monfredo turns her observant eye on the heart of our nation, which is being torn in two.

Populated by both Union and Confederate sympathizers, Washington City is a hotbed of rolling emotions in 1862. President Lincoln, reeling from defeats at Manassas and Ball’s Bluff, rallies the Union troops for the largest single campaign of the Civil War; the Virginia Peninsula Campaign. And two of Seneca Falls own take their places among the players of history; sparked by the fires of conviction.

The Lily was the first U.S. newspaper edited by and for women. It was published from 1849 to 1853 by Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818–1894), before she sold the newspaper to Mary Birdsall in 1854. While the newspaper initially focused on temperance, it soon broadened its focus to include the many issues of women’s rights activists in the 1850s. It grew in its distribution because of its discussion of bloomers, a comfortable fashion popularized by Bloomer in the paper.

In 1848, The Lily developed as a publication for “home distribution” among the women who belonged to the Seneca Falls Ladies Temperance Society in response to their feeling marginalized by the larger temperance movement. Enthusiasm for the project quickly faded, however. Amelia Bloomer did not want to see the paper die, and so she took on responsibility for editing and publishing the paper. Bloomer’s initial interest was not in women’s rights but in temperance, and this topic featured prominently in its early issues, even after the paper detached from the Temperance Society. Bloomer believed that women writing in pursuit of reform was less unseemly than giving speeches or lectures.

Special price of only for $35.00 total.
